Alone in my day I wander across the wide expanse I’ve made for myself—a bed, unmade, and the loose leaves of tea and tobacco rolling slowly across the floor. How do we equip ourselves with the tools to remember terrible things? The thoughts of midday hours, when we’ve lost our grip on the future, and all the small desires laid into the people we meet. Something strange happens once we let go and push ourselves toward evening, the most forgiving time of day, when no one shares our thoughts except the chatting branches overhead, so slender in their behavior toward the moon. I have come by so many things in the space of this great house. Carolina’s laugh sings out from the kitchen and grape leaves carry their weight above me, so flat against the plate of blue that spins above us having long ago lost its balance and flooded the universe in its path.
